If you have ever heard the terms groupage, part-load, LTL or LCL and wondered whether they describe the same thing — they do, mostly. They are all variants of the same idea: instead of paying for an entire trailer or container, you share the space with other shippers and pay only for what you actually use.
Groupage is the freight forwarder's bread and butter, and for cargo moving between Türkiye and the United Kingdom it can be the difference between an affordable, predictable supply chain and a sequence of expensive express movements.
What is groupage shipping?
Groupage is a service where goods from multiple senders are loaded into the same trailer or container. The freight forwarder consolidates the consignments at a hub, books a single trailer or container, and delivers each shipment to its respective destination at the end of the journey.
The big advantage is shared cost: instead of paying the full trailer / container fee, you only pay for the volume and weight of your own goods. The trade-off is a fixed schedule — groupage trailers leave on planned days, not whenever you are ready.
When does groupage make sense?
Groupage is the right choice when:
- Your shipment is somewhere between 1 pallet and half a trailer
- You have planning lead time — you can wait for the next scheduled departure
- Cost matters more than absolute speed
- You want a single, end-to-end relationship with a freight forwarder (including customs)
Groupage is not the right choice when:
- The shipment is urgent (consider our Speedy Van express service instead)
- The goods are oversized, hazardous, temperature-controlled or otherwise incompatible with general cargo
- You have a full trailer of cargo — at that point full-load (FTL) is more efficient
Groupage vs full load vs Speedy Van
| Service | Best for | Indicative transit Türkiye → UK | |---|---|---| | Groupage | 1 pallet to half a trailer, scheduled | 5–7 days | | Full load | Full trailer of cargo | 5–7 days, dedicated | | Speedy Van | Urgent, small-volume shipments | 72 hours UK ↔ Türkiye |
How groupage works in practice
A typical Türkiye → UK groupage move looks like this:
- You send us the collection address, weight, dimensions and commodity of your consignment.
- We confirm the next available groupage trailer and quote a fixed price.
- Your goods are collected and consolidated with other shipments at our hub.
- The trailer departs on its scheduled day.
- On arrival in the UK, our customs team in Dover handles the clearance.
- The consignment is delivered to your door via our distribution partners.
What about customs?
Customs clearance is part of every groupage move. We handle the UK import declaration via the Customs Declaration Service (CDS), prepare T1 transit documents where needed, and manage GVMS movements for roll-on roll-off routes through Dover. The customs cost is included in your quote — no surprises after delivery.
